
Alar Konist
Professor Konist is the acting director of Department of Energy Technology. He is the head of the research group of Sustainable Energy and Fuels at the same department. Prof. Konist’s current R&D pursuits are strongly focused on CCS and CCU technologies, especially oxyfuel CFBC technology, also he is studying activation of oil shale and co-pyrolysis/co-gasificatio of biomass and oil shale. He has led several research grant projects and applied studies on sustainable energy, cleaner production, and utilisation of solid residues like ash. He is currently leading a personal grant project on the effects of activation conditions on preparation of porous carbon from oil shale.
He has been responsible for designing and building of new research laboratory for thermochemical processes, especially meant for renewables. The most unique and self-designed device is 60 kWth CFB test rig. Besides that he has been active doing experiments on utility scale CFBC boilers and is acting as a consultant for companies utilizing Oil Shale and CFBC technology.
